If you want to work out four days a week, think about your goals: If you want to add muscle, cut a cardio day. If you want to work out five days per week and are working on both strength and cardiovascular fitness, try three days of strength training, two days of cardio, and two days of active rest. For example, if your upper body is sore, work out your lower body the next time you exercise instead. Another option is to alternate your workouts to avoid overusing certain muscle groups. If you’re experiencing muscle soreness, you may need only two or three days of rest. However, as mentioned above, athletes can start losing muscles after three weeks of inactivity. We know that skeletal muscular strength stays about the same during a month of not exercising. If you take a few weeks off from exercising, your muscle strength won’t take much of a hit. As long as you’re not pushing yourself too hard or getting obsessive about it, working out every day is fine.
